Multiplication is just a speedy way of adding equal groups!

🤔 What Is Multiplication?

When we add the same number over and over, we can use multiplication as a shortcut. Instead of writing a long adding sum, we write it in one quick step!

4 + 4 + 4 = 12
Three lots of 4 (the long way)
=
✖️
3 × 4 = 12
Much faster!
💡 How to read it: 3 × 4 means "3 groups of 4". The first number tells you how many groups. The second number tells you how many are in each group.
Any number × 1 = itself  (e.g. 7×1=7)
Any number × 0 = 0  (e.g. 9×0=0)
Order doesn't matter! 3×4 = 4×3
× 2 = double the number
× 10 = add a zero on the end

🟠 Groups Explorer

Change the numbers and watch the equal groups appear!

×
3 × 4 = 12
4 + 4 + 4 = 12

📐 Array Explorer

An array lines objects into rows and columns. Rows × Columns = Total!

×
3 rows × 4 cols = 12

Try swapping: 3 × 4 gives the same answer as 4 × 3. That's called the commutative property! 🤯
